Food in the modern world

This link takes you to a set of pages with a useful introduction to the issues of food production, transport and waste around the world. Use the menu items on the left when you reach the page to navigate through some other important issues such as the real cost of cheap food.

The story of food

An animation from Canada with a simple look at where our food comes from and some of the problems of the current food production system. It provides a very simplified explanation and has a definite bias against the current global food system (the situation is more nuanced than this), but it is included here because it provides a useful starting point to some of the issues relating to the supply of our food in the modern world.

Where does your food come from?

Knowing where our food comes from is an important issue for most of us, but it has become increasingly difficult to do this in recent decades as the production and supply processes behind our food have become ever more complex and globalised. There are suprisingly few good, clear explanations out there of these processes work and where our food comes from, but this is one of the better ones.

The footprint of meat

The above link looks at the carbon footprint of different types of meat, and finds some startling differences.  On a similar topic, this link explores the impact that eating beef has on the world.

An inconvenient sandwich

Most of us use convenience food sometimes - it is quick, cheap and something we can eat wherever we happen to be. This report by the New Economics Foundation shows the hidden costs of our convenience food to society, public health and the environment.

Re-framing the great food debate

Another NEF report, looking at what we need to do to move towards a more sustainable food supply system. It comes up with some far-reaching consequences on how we live our lives more generally.
