Parenting

Parenting can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences in life, but it can also be stressful, exhausting and complicated.  The modern world can make this process even more challenging as there are many pressures and influences on both parents and kids (from consumerism to television), an increasingly complex world for you both to deal with and a wide range of  (often conflicting) views on how we should bring up our kids.

This section contains some resources to help you address various challenges to parenting in the modern world.

Children and consumerism

Our children are growing up in a world quite unlike the one that existed even a decade ago.  From a very young age, they can be actively involved in using media - from the television to the internet - and consequently exposed to the influences and risks that these things bring (as well as, of course, the many positive aspects of them).

As a parent, it can be difficult to keep up with these developments, let alone work out how to help your children develop the skills to use media safely, critically and intelligently - including how to avoid getting sucked in by the lure of consumerism.

Media Awareness Network

An organisation that provides some useful (and free) resources and advice to help parents and teachers do this, in a way that is not over-protective, but that helps children develop the skills they need to think for themselves within the pressures and complexity of modern life.

Although the site was developed for a Canadian audience, its materials are relevant to everyone.

Some particularly useful materials include:

How to deal with other media as a parent - including television, films, the internet and video games.
